THEN . . .
It all started around thirty years ago with two groups of friends, one in Sanford,
FL. and one in Orlando. What they all had in common was their Irish Heritage.
The two groups merged in 1979 to become the Irish American Club of Central Florida,
the purpose of which was to promote Irish Culture and social events. In 1998
the Club became the Irish American Cultural Society and many of the original
founders are still members. Membership has grown steadily, and today has
exceeded 300. The I.A.C.S. is a member of the Florida Irish Coalition which
is made up of many other Irish American clubs and organizations throughout
the state.
NOW . . .
The Society is only beginning to explore the ways to enjoy our heritage. In
addition to monthly meetings, the Society sponsors cultural shows, the annual St. Patrick's Day coloring contest and a scholarship
fund and an essay contest for 8th graders. We are constantly growing our
community, emphasizing involvement of young families and always looking for
ways to make being Irish fun while adding to our understanding of what it
means to be Irish in today’s busy world.
